That lasted until I could no longer deny that I had this deep unexplored desire to be with the same-sex. In fact, I ended up in a relationship with my female best friend at the time. You have to decide when and how to come out to the various circles in your life—school, family, friends, workplace, etc.
Men. Thriving. The best part was feeling free and no longer holding in a secret. Most of my family did great with hearing the truth about my sexuality. I was closeted into my 20s, until my girlfriend coaxed me into accepting the part of me that liked men.
One thing led to another and we started fooling around. The next morning he asked if [me being gay] was [his fault]. A video celebrating LGBTQ+ love and culture, showcasing gay teenagers, boys love, and gay relationships with hashtags like #lgbtqlove and #gayculture.
After that I remained closeted until I knew deep inside that I was gay but had never really told anyone. In honor of National Coming Out Day, and in an effort to shed light on the bright and dark sides of being true to yourself about being attracted to the same sex, LEVEL spoke with eight queer men of color to share their coming out journey.
While in college, I eventually told various family members in stages until I was completely free and open. He became one of my best friends and the first person I ever actually came out to. Love, for two gay Black Jamaican men, Edvin Thompson (32) and Doquan Hines (34), is a statement—bold, intentional, and always in full color.
Neither one of us were out but we were hanging out at his house and wrestling around like teenagers do. He was the running back on our school's football team. I knew I wanted to marry a guy when I met my straight high school crush. At the time, he saw homosexuality and masculinity as mutually exclusive, and he esteemed masculinity so much that any threat to that concept was repulsive to him.
I was only five years old, but I will never forget that feeling.

My father is an alpha male and needed some time to process the news. Based on a poem by award-winning queer writer Dean Atta, the film uses stop motion animation to tell the story of two young Black men who fall in love. It was like a weight lifted off my shoulders.
I had to do some soul-searching to figure out who I was in terms of my sexuality. I owe a ton to her when it comes to shedding internalized homophobia and gathering the courage to come out. That is unless your coming-of-age era coincides with internal struggles around coming out, which opens up a whole new set of emotional challenges.
Everyone in my life at that time knew I was gay except my family. By showcasing Black gay love stories, these couples are bringing more joy into the world and proving the skeptics (and bigots) wrong one photo at a time.
